Missing Shoes and Santa Socks

In The Daily Drool on April 5, 2010 at 11:27 am

I don’t know where my shoes are.

My dad and his buddies unloaded the moving truck while I was driving over, they loaded it all into the garage, into the crevices and spaces that were available, so there are boxes behind things like his motorcycle, and a large cabinet mid-construction, and other big heavy things that I can’t see through.

Somewhere, out there amidst the mess, are my shoes.

Sure, I thought it would be a good idea to pack a little carry-along bag, a bag of necessities- my toothbrush, clean change of clothes, etc.  But what wound up in the bag were a pair of sweatpants, two pairs of socks, my phone charger and flip flops.  I moved, painted, and cleaned in one shirt.  Gross.  Then I got home where it was friggin’ SNOWING, and all I had for my feet were my flip flops!

Now it’s a few days later and thankfully I’ve located/unpacked the majority of my clothes… I’ve even managed to sort out my sock and underwear drawer, but the shoes?  Well, let’s just say these little piggies are chillin’.

Hence the Santa Socks.

You see, I woke up in the middle of the night with cold toesies, stumbled over to the sock bin and pulled a pair out.  I woke up this morning with chuckles at what I found on my feet.

Christmas in April.

Indeed.

  • Too much stuff left to do, not enough time left to do it.
  • I. MISS. MY. MAC.
  • The cats are mending their disappointment over their missing perches (couch, bed, chairs, etc.) by laying in the middle of the empty spaces like Egyptian Mao’s… No amount of “MOVE!” and “WATCH OUT”s seem to help.
  • I have entirely too many stacks of “I’ll deal with this later” mail… don’t let that shit pile up, people.  It will bury you!
  • Who wants to come paint my apartment for me?
  • Why do apartments in LA refuse to provide fridges?  Now I have this large refrigerated cube that I can’t sell till I’m moving, but no one seems to by biting.  Refuse to let go for a tuppence, I’m probably going to have to haul it home with me and sell there.  Could be worse, I once looked at a place that provided neither a fridge, nor a stove!
  • Tired.  Grumpy.  And my carpet is DISGUSTING.
  • Moving to commence Tues. morn.  Expect radio interweb silence for a few days.  Entertain yourself with the lovely FalloutGirl.  That’s where I’d be if I wasn’t here 🙂

Losing my mind amidst packing-tape and sock-drawers

In The Daily Drool on March 25, 2010 at 11:33 am

I have about fifty pairs of socks.

I’m not exagerrating.

And as I began stuffing them into garbage bags (for that’s my second moving-container of choice) I tried to throw some out.  “But there’s nothing wrong with them!”  You haven’t worn these pumpking orange socks since 1998!  “But they’re so fun, and… I might!”  WHEN?  “Halloween?  or Harvest time…”  HARVEST TIME?  Are you moving to the 1800’s?  Throw em out, Throw em out, THROW EM OUT!  (beat, beat, beat)  “No.”

And so it goes.

I’m taking 48 pairs of socks home with me because two pair had undeniably irreperable holes.

I hate packing.  Oh, I’m sorry, that should be I HATE PACKING.  And I DESPISE MOVING, because it requires packing…. and packing requires sorting, which drives me mad.

And that’s all I have to say about anything today.  (Grumpity, GaRump!)

How’s things on your planet?

Discoveries

In The Daily Drool on March 22, 2010 at 9:10 am

Today, in my current pack-attack-apartment-sack-ing… I found:

– Three pairs of painted cardboard and plastic bottle clown-feet-size prop shoes that my friends and I used in a JUNIOR HIGH talent contest.  They were in my costume box along with some wigs, a pair of sequined suspenders, and a cave-woman costume that I made in High-School.  (sigh)

– About two MILLION candles… What is my problem?  A little repressed pyro in here somewhere?

– 1 pack of herbal cigarettes from a play I did 6 YEARS ago… they smell funky.

– Battleship.  Yes, really.

-A nose-shaped pencil holder that my friend made for me in high-school – the pencils go up the nostrils.  Yes, even in high-school I had exquisite taste.

-A wine basket for picnics that I have NEVER used.

-Moody/painted lightbulbs for when I open that House of Sin.

There were other little surprises here and there, but the biggest surprise is that I have been saving/hauling all this stuff around with me over the years.  And perhaps it’s the inner actress in me (I might need that!  I might be able to use that in a show/photo-shoot/for a party) that keeps me in cave-girl costumes and candles, but really- the time has come to say “GOODBYE”

Which is why, come this weekend, all potentially saleable goods will be on hand for garage salers to take make into their own little “Albatross.”

“Found” packing

In The Daily Drool on March 20, 2010 at 10:11 am

Sooooo, I’m packing.  And it’s going alright because I’ve been doing a couple boxes here, a couple boxes there.  And I’m intending to get rid of a lot of this stuff, so, you know, less to pack.

But I have discovered a couple “fun” tips:

  • Ralph’s has excellent apple boxes, and apple boxes make for excellent packing.  Just talk up the produce guy, get yer’ boxes, drop ’em off, and head to the next store, next produce guy, etc.
  • Packing materials can be expensive.  I had some bubble wrap lying around that I used on some of my fancier dishes, but then I got to thinking “I’m going to have to go buy a newspaper or something to wrap these things in.”  Then the Victoria Secret catelogue came in the mail… I tore out the staples and that mama-jamma has been very helpful for wrapping.
  • Additionally, I’ve been carting my old bank and credit card statements around since 1998!  Don’t really need those anymore (apparently the tax rule is 7 years, not 12!)  So I got to shredding and MY-oh-MY doesn’t shredded paper make for FANTASTIC packing material!  I’ve got happy, well-protected vases wrapped in Victoria’s Secret and nestled in Citi-bank.

And that’s what I’ve learned so far.  I’ve also learned that “Packing” makes me less wont to make dinner, so I’ve been eating a little too much snack/junk food.  Tonight I am going to the store and get myself something healthy!
